And, I will have to disagree with my opponents safety being my responsibility in a physical sport like MMA or boxing. When I go to strike someone or hit a move..their safety is not on my mind. In practice, but not in an actual fight!

Do you actually participate in MMA?   Where do you now or where did you train and what was your primary discipline?

Also, we don't know a lot about you?   What part of the country do you live in and how old are you?   What in the hell is your name?   [lol]

Finally, are you a body builder?   Just wondering as the avatar would suggest so.  Smile

The reason you don't know alot about me is that I pretty much stay out of the lime light and don't volunteer alot of information about myself. Just like in "real life." About me..

Haven't done a live fight, but I've trained(for MMA) for a couple of years now, but have followed MMA since the begining(the first UFC). I've boxed since I was a kid and wrestled for just over 10years. So, I don't have a primary discipline..I consider myself all around, but I'm strongest in wrestling. What else..

I'm 35, I've been into weight lifting since I was 13. Getting as big as 278 @5'10. Anything i miss you can PM me

Daryn, as far as your comment about me training and so forth...

IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER!! Because, in the end its still just the internet. The only thing I've done in these threads is offer up my OPINION on different subjects. If you don't agree with it..okay..lets move on. I'm not going to press it or try and have you see my way because its really not that important[thumbsup]

I say all that to say..LETS HAVE FUN WITH THIS. Its no different then talking football or other athletics. Its all in fun.

And actually, with the long history you have I would LOVE to spare or train with you. I love competition.

i'm sorry i have to disagree with you 100% here.  it's a sport not life and death.  you demonstrate sportsmanship.  it's the way i was taught.  way my son has been taught.  it's a common value that everyone who understands what martial arts is all about respects.  martial arts is a discipline.  therein lies the rub.  discipline.  it has unfortunately been watered down and basterdized by all too many substandard human beings.

i've worked with people professional fighters on occassion, sparred with people again professionals on occassion, hit people and have been hit by people, been broken more times than i can recount in one paragraph.  I have never intentionally hurt an opponent, disrespected my opponent or myself, disrespected my teacher, or disrespected my dojo or the art that i was studying.  i would not do it.  i would not work with people who would do it.  and i will forever be offended and repulsed by those who do.  just my .02.

I see your point. My point was in a match, my first concern is not going to be the other guys safety. In a full contact sport like MMA or boxing the chance of hurting the person or getting hurt is around every corner. When I hit someone I'm trying to finish the fight, period. That means I've got to hit them hard enough where it ends the fight. Thats violent and thats MMA. There is nothing safe about a leg kick or a punch to a persons exposed head. NOTHING!

If you guys disagree with me..again, okay. We can agree to disagree.

impressive enough.

when I did my martial arts work my master used to be able to tell when I lifted and would yell at me. His thing was stay flexible. Now that I am lifting regularly I lost so much flexibility.... I'm 6'4" 210 now. but, alas, 55 years young.

hi mike.

[thumbsup] i can't stress this one enough.  technique trumps strength every time.  technique requires a certain minimum degree of flexibility.  there are an infinite myriad number of moves that become available to you the more flexible you are.  look up eddie bravo sometime.  fascinating if not yoga-esquely impossible to pull off but fascinating none the less.

i've always been blessed with being ridiculously flexible which helped me immeasurably against stronger fighters.  i will be the first to admit that i can't break glass with a punch.  strong enough i suppose but never one of those incredible hulk types.  lol or even the ripped diesel ones.  i've done resistance work.  but never lifted.  in the end it was always the technique.  i learned early on that i needed to get close fast or it was going to be a long day.  as an aside again mad props to you again john on techniques for countering my kickboxer brother when we sparred.  worked time and again and i and my face appreciate it.  Tongue

anyways, this all lead to the mental chess which was what made me fall in love with the sport to begin with.  being a frenetic hyper guy (those who've hung out with me know lol) i aloways wanted to know how fast i could think.  i love chess and for the same reason love mma.

john, 55?!?  dude.  i hope i'm in such great at 55.  more props to you buddy.

Hey Mike,

Just trying to find out more about you, what you like to do, etc.  Trying to get info from you is like trying to get a cigar newbie to tell us more about himself.  [lol] Its been a great conversation and its interesting to hear more from those who have interest in the sport.

Very cool that you have wrestling as a background.   I started wrestling as a kindergardener and I am miffed that they don't have programs where I live for my young boys.   They don't start here until junior high.   Yet other towns in ND get them going young.

As for your lifting I would love to hear more about your nutritional supplementation.   That is my specific area of interest and I do it for a living.   I always love to hear experiences.   Smile

Mike,  please take the inquiry as a compliment.   Stogie Chat is not just the internet to many here.   Its family.   I personally experienced and witness stronger friendships here than I have ever imagined.

Rob, your absolutely right about technique vs strength!!!!!!! You should be screaming that at the top of your lungs. I know in highschool it would always be the ones with the superior technique that would break down the big muscle guy.  BUT, strength has its place also. You just have to know WHEN to use it. I'm only about 225 right now and would never get as heavy or get as big as I did before.

I just wanted to add a quick example of technique vs strength. NC State had a wrestler(Sylvester Terkey) who as a jr, made it to the semi finals of the NCAA by pinning all of his opponents on sheer strength! When he got to the finals he faced some guy named Kurt Angle who he towered over and out weighed by 55lbs. Well, in the last period of the match Angle was able to use Terkeys strength against him and score. Winning the match and the title. It was amazing to say the least. The following year, Terkey (with no technique and elementary skill) managed to not only win the title, but pin all of his opponents in under a minute. Amazing!!

Yea, I'm really quiet and I hardly EVER talk about myself(drives the women I've dated insane). As you guys can see you have stumbled on a passion of mine so I was more then ready to give my two centsBig Grin. I love MMA ,I just wish I had started younger.

As far as the wrestling..I love it more then anything else!! We have a couple of places here that do jj,self defense, ect. and they do wrestling and grappling a few days a week. So, its not bad. As far as getting your boys involved maybe the only way to do it(outside of a mat in your basement or garage) is to go to a local school and use their mats. Also, almost every state has summer tournaments that start after the wrestling season.

And with the nutrition..I might be alittle rusty(been slack the last few years) but I'm always willing to discuss thoughts and ideas on diet.
