601

I think I posted on here a while back that I got a deal on the 601 label from famous. 2 of the red, green, blue and black. my intention was to let the sit for a while then try them all out one day. I almost succeeded today. everyone but the red (habano). I did space them out, so I would have better judgement and here's how it goes:

Connecticut (black): Was not crazy about it for the first inch or so. Then it got a very nice mellow flavor to it. The wrapper was naturally sweet and I enjoyed it. Think Baccart if they weren't too sweet. The wrapper looked rough but yet showed some quality to it that I can't explain. It's almost as if it was meant to look beat up. Craftfully roughed up you could say. I could see this being a regular morning smoke. More full bodied than my P1's but not too strong for a morning stick.

Maduro (blue): The box pressing was nice but it burned like the leaning tower of pisa. A very nice medium bodied smoke with the traditional maduro taste. actually, i'd say mild-medium in strength. very earthy like finish.

Oscuro (green): the first 1/8 inch kicked me in the gut and then almost instantly mellowed out. the construction was flawless. Beautiful goosbumps and a perfect burn. I enjoyed the taste but cannot really describe its flavor. Just good I guess. This will be a staple in my humidor for sure. I was impressed with every aspect of it. It has a nice spice finish but not pepper, just spice. In fact, exhaling through my nose was the most pleasing on this one.

Overall I'd have to say I really was pleased with the line and if time permitted might have squeezed the red (habano) in there. But I'm glad I didn't over do it too much Smile My only note of concern is that each body was below what the 601 website said. I didn't find the maduro to be full bodied at all but more of a low to mid medium. The black is said to be medium to full. A solid mild is more like it. The green kicked me for an instant and then mellowed down. Full bodied? Maybe, but not the powerhouse they make it out to be. If you haven't tried them, do yourself a favor.

The red is my favorite.  The greens are pretty darn good.  The blacks are a good morning smoke.  I don't like the blues.

I have only had the Red.  The first one was plugged, but the rest have been good.  Going to need to get a fiver of each of the rest once I make some room.

Man, the green I had made me feel borderline drunk! It was crazy strong but very good.

My fav. is the red. Strong, but not something that I have to plan my day around.

don't ask me why, but i'm the exact opposite. the reds knock me for a loop! but the greens are just a little on the strong side, but tastey. i can usually smoke one without having to lay down. [lol]

Well guys I've finished the line this evening. The Red (habano) was very good indeed. I must say I found it stronger than the green line. It was a spicy little bastard. It had the kick the green did but it lasted throughout. I wasn't knocked out by it at all, but it was definitely spicy. The construction on this baby was amazing. I know carl had some trouble with his, but if there's one thing the 601 line has, it's flawless construction. Perfect amounts of smoke come through these babies. Of course, the exception being the blue (maduro) but it was box pressed and while the burn sucked the smoke came out generously. In the end, my only problem was that the 601 one brand, while now being one of my favorites is over hyped in the stength department. I've been knocked on my ass multiple times. But these did nothing for me in that department. I know I'm bigger than most of you, but I can still be brought to the fetal position by some smokes that are out there. The EO site claims the whole line to be full bodied. All I can say is.....no. Definitely not. Very great smokes. Not Joya de Nicaraguas, Pepin Blacks, Camacho or Serie Rs. Still the line is very solid and I need to get some more of these (especially the green) soon.Big Grin

I like to have an open mind.  If I go out for dinner at a place that everybody says is great, and it sucks, I still give it another shot.  I think everybody gets a mulligan from time to time.  The 601 red was no excetpion.  The first one was an utter shit bag, but after that they were great.

Like so many said "its hand made, there is bound to be a bad one now and then".
