why not just glue cedar onto the styrofoam? It seems to me the foam in there is what is making your seal. Alternatively you can leave it as is and use it just like a cooler and store your gars in boxes.

thanks for the ideas. Skipper, i thought the same thing, it makes a good seal with the styrofoam. i may try some boxes and a large humidifier when i can order some more sticks. will be a working project...

Before you do any gluing, try to find out what kind of foam you have. Then try to find a glue that is compatible with that type of foam.
Most Styrofoam will "melt" with anything that is not a water based glue, several other types of foam normally used with coolers emit an odor that is unpleasant, but very hard to get rid of.
Also, most "foams" are not waterproof, and you are trying to keep it humid. You may be asking for problems further down the road if you don't somehow seal the foam.
Personally, I would build a box that sets down inside the foam or just remove the foam and line the box. Same thing with the lid and make your own seal.
Don't get all caught up in the Spanish cedar thing either, there are several other woods that can be used or you can use veneer over MDF like most of the desktop humidors are made of. They seem to work just fine. And it's a lot more cost effective.
If you are using this for box storage, that should take care of the cedar smell you are looking for - if you can find a cigar that still comes in a cedar box as they are becoming a rarity too.
Good luck with the project, it looks like it could be a really nice humidor. Great idea.

cool thanks. i think the first thing im gonna do is get a larger humidifier and just see if i can maintain some humidity in it and see if it smells when humid.
if i can get cedar boxes, do you think it would be fine to store sticks in the boxes and put the boxes in the cooler? as long as it holds humidity and doesn't stink. thanks again
