El Cobre, with 1.5 yrs on it
#1
First off, thanks to Macallan for sending me this stick, among others, I will post pics soon, but wanted to get this done, I promised I would, and was really looking forwrd to this one.

Davidwys started a bundle split/group buy on the El Cobres, and having never tried one, I threw my hat into the ring.  Macallan2 saw the thread, and, in returning a favor, he sent me 2 El Cobres from his stash, one from 7/07 and one from 12/08.  I smoked the one from 7/07 today on his recommendation, and promised a review.

To start, this stick is awesome looking.  Very firm, almost tight to the touch.  A chocolate brown wrapper, and a very nice tobacco, almost dark chocolate/bakers chocolate smell to the foot.

The Pre-draw was a bit tight, but decided to light up and see how it progressed.  After light, The first inch was tight, almost difficult to pull on, but still great flavors.  Medium in body to me, it carried a sweet-leather taste with a hint of nutmeg and produced a white, dense ash.

After the first inch, the draw become much better, and the spice ramped up a bit.  The body changed to more of medium-full, and the ash was noticeable flakier and grayish in color.  The sweetness was replaced with a mild peppery flavor that reminded me of my first LFD Ligero.  Not the kick you in the teeth type power, but was glad I had eaten.  The retro-hale was peppery and actually tingled a bit, causing my eyes to water just a touch.  [baby]

By the last 3rd of this stick, I had decided that it's an awesome cigar.  Definatly worth the price, infact, worth twice the price IMHO.  Lot's of spice in the end, with a great burn line and no wrapper issues in the slightest.  A great cigar, definatly recommended to one and all.  I will be very excited to see how different ages on this stick changes it complexity.  I've still got the one from 12-08, and the ones I just got from David.  The comparison will be fun, and reviews will be coming form them shortly.  Thanks to Macallan for this opportunity.  A BOTL of the finest caliber, thank you my friend.  [thumbsup]  Hope this review was at least entertaining, would love to hear others views on this stick.

For those who smoke and keep El Cobres regularly...

I bought a bundle of churchills in January.  I hear they become even more exceptional with age.  That said, how long should one let them rest?  Rather, how soon can you smoke them?

You're a bad man, wingo.  I tried one fresh and found them to be a bit on the harsh side.

Great review!  I love these ever since Skipper got me hooked on them! Just make sure that you eat before smoking. Big Grin

If you ever get to talk to Bulz....ask him the story about this cigar....it's his "baby"! and Skipper can tell you all about it too!

I just wish I had one of the original boxes.

I guess everyone has different tastes, maybe a couple months should knock the edge off. Smile
