Any Cutting and Lighting Tips?
#1
I'm a little lazy to search the entire forum for tips on these things, so sorry for my laziness. Wink

I'm curious how to cut robusto cigars? I usually cut just the little cap part off, but is there a proper length or way to tell where to cut? I use a $4 gilotine double-blade self-sharpening cutter, but I'm sure there's probably better, sharper cutters out there. It replaced a dulling $3 cutter. LOL. I'm cheap. Wink

Also, is there a proper way to light a cigar? I use a torch lighter with butane that's been filtered 4 or more times. I usually just light around the middle without lighting the middle. I saw this done on a youtube video, and figured it must be the proper way to do it. Any ideas?

Snip the tip!  Usually you want to snip it at the curve transition part between teh cap and the. body? of the cigar, so there is still some curve left when your done.  It takes some practice.  But leaving part of the cap helps to keep the cigar from unraveling.

as for lighting I usually toast the end a bit with the lighter by holding the flame up to the end or near it, while slowly rotating the cigar.  Then I put it in my mouth and hold the ligther up near the end and take a couple puffs (or a bunch!) to get it lit.
Others can probably expain it better.  :p

Hmm.. the cutting seems to be fairly close to how I do it. There's still a curve to the end. Lighting seems kind of the same too, though I don't roll it. I can just fire the torch straight at the end in a circular motion, then when it stays red in that area, I puff on it. The torch I have is pretty accurate and straight. Kinda cool, really. Smile

You only need to cut a small slice off the head, never past the cap or the wrapper will unravel as you smoke it. On torps about 3/8" to 5/8"

Toast the foot of the cigar before lighting then light and rotate cigar until the whole foot is lit, then gently blow on foot to make sure you have complete burn started.

You can do it any way you want, this is how I do it. [rob]

Use a punch cutter. In fact get a torch lighter with one or 2 built in.
I find that punch cutting works the most most consistently. Never
cracks the cap and it concentrates the flavor much like a torpedo.
