This was my oldest son's school desk.
Kept it forever.  It was a dark stain (typical school desk color).  I forgot to take a pic before I sanded it. Got it sanded down to it's natural wood. Gonna repaint the iron flat black then decide on a stain. 
It's gonna be a present to his son who's 2.5.
