Glue for decorating with cigar bands
#1
So, I'm decorating the lids of my 74 qt tupperdors with cigar bands and stickers. Things were progressing well, until this morning I noticed that a fair number of bands had started to peel off.

I used an Elmer's glue stick, thinking its designed for paper and that it would stick to the plastic of the lid too, but apparently I was wrong.

Anyone have any ideas on a cheap, clear, non-messy glue that works well with plastics?

I can't really think of anything but model glue, and its kinda messy, not easy to coat the bands in entirety, and may bleed through the paper and it can dissolve certain plastics (not sure what Iris Weatherproof containers are made of specifically).

Thanks,
Sean

I'm not sure what glue to use, maybe a rubber cement?

But I'd think the plastic areas would need to not be smooth (in order for the glue to hold better).  Maybe try using a little bit of a rough sandpaper on it.

Thats kinda why i was thinking of model glue, as its intended for use on plastic, even smooth plastic. Just will be difficult to spread around on the back of the labels, especially without making a mess.

Mod Podge will be your best bet. My wife is crafty, and uses it for lots of stuff.
Get a small foam paint brush for application. Brushes on white, and dries clear. You can get different finishes - shiny, matte, etc.
You can get it at Wal-mart or any craft type store.

I've used Mod Podge on humidors and then used poly to seal. I'm not sure how Mod Podge will work on something flexible like that.

Yeah, a number of people on the 3 forums I follow (including this one) have used mod podge for similar projects, then sealed with polyurethane or some other clear, spray on sealant.

The Elmer's stick glue actually worked pretty decent and is easy to apply and easy clean up if its even needed.

Bands will stay well stuck for a week or more. About half i applied are actually still holding fine, so I'm planning to use it, then a clear acrylic matte spray over top in several coats.

Figure if it adheres to and protects painted metal, it should hold them permanently and protect them from damage.
