Me personally I buy mostly on-line sellers, my reason is:
Price.
Discounts.
Free Shipping.
Convince.
No Sales Tax.
No State Cigar Tax.
Plus most of my favorite on-line retailer, send me e-mail.
Also I find the On-line retails in most cases, offer better customer service then my local B & M's.
IMHO
Honestly a Cigar to me is a luxury item, something I love, but do not have to have, many of the local B & M's offer little or no reason to buy there.
We do have one that is like a 40 minute drive, in Scottsdale, Arizona they offer great selection, great customer service, and funny thing is they want your business so bad. They will match online pries, and specials if you show then the special.
This particular store does a large on-line business, so they have huge buying power.

They say you should always suppory your local B&M and I do if I'm picking up a single or using their lounge. But as far as buying boxes well on line is cheaper by a wide margin. If I lived in PA I would buy local all the time but NJ is making it difficult for retailers and consumers to support the state.

On-line is a no brainier, with State Cigar Tax @ $0.22/Stick + Plus 10-12% State, City, and Local Sales Tax, and mostly M.S.R.P. Pricing at the local B & M.
On-line is a no brainier for me also.

I do pretty much all of my purchasing online - I have a couple of spots that are my go-to not only due to the prices and service, but they also supported me with events I helped organize in years past.
There is a B&M near me that is fine, but there is not enough of a draw for me to go there when I can sit on my front porch and enjoy the day/evening.

I'd say, at least 99% of what I buy is online. Not really any descent B/Ms near me, only a few small, hole-in-the-wall types, where I can buy a stick at 5 times the price of online. No good lounges either, or events...just real small stuff & not worth the time to go.

I was at my local B & M yesterday, brought one Cigar with me, bought (2) Charter Oaks Toro's, had a Bottle of Barrel Blow out draft beer that was $3.00. Spent over $15.00. I maybe go there, or another B & M a couple times a month.
But Honeslty I am getting like 38 sticks shipped tomarrow, I bid low OJ CigarBid, and won. Think it will be like $70.00 Delievered. Every once in a while I just get lucky, people are not bidding on sticks I like, and you get them too cheap to pass.

No B&M's left where I live, so online is my choice. I do try and do my bit for local B&M's when I travel, but its usually a few sticks as opposed to a box. That being said, I did buy a box at Joe and Pips B&M when I visited their lounge .... just the right thing to do when I took in to account the hospitality and the company I was with.

Will I got this thing from CI the other day, it was called "End of Summer Sale", the price were no were near where a B & M could ever be. Honeslty even some time I do not know how on-line has such low crazy prices. But we as consume can choose to buy or wait longer.
Online is the new catalogue sales or mail order. The only way a B & M will survive is with competitive pricing, great service, great clean shop, if they do not the will eventually be history.
Speaking of history Sears Roebuck, and Co., did not change with the times, and are pretty much closed. Montgomery Wards is gone, never to be seen again, as they never changed their business plan.

I agree with what you say about how low prices are crazy (especially in end of season sales etc), and how the B&M's have to be competitive to survive .... however ... its not always simply about the price. I am an advocate of accepting things for their worth first and foremost, for example ... I know I can buy a box of cigars for less on line, but the atmosphere and company in the lounge or store has its worth as well, so I knowingly and happily pay the difference.
Its like buying a beer from a supermarket or an offlicence compared with buying a beer from a bar. Same scenario ... same type of ambiance to be paid for at the end of the day.
