Free to Air Satelite

The problem with most of this is not being 3 hours old. Heck even a day old is ok. Resolution is the issue. Most free-based systems resolve to a few square miles. better feeds off of lower orbit satellites have a 5x tighter resolution which helps pinpoint temperature breaks, the primary thing you look for in offshore fishing.

I'll take a closer look at your inks. Thanks.

There are actually a few NOAA SSB/FM SSTV radio stations that have decent resolution.   Again, I did this YEARS ago for a friend and much has changed now.   We used nothing but a SSB radio, labtop, cable and a special dongle to convert the fax audio to computer.   Now the software does the conversion through the sound card.      If I remember correctly, it was the feed from the sat which the local station picks up and resends to other locations via SSB.   Its not the direct signal from the sat, but only about 10 seconds off.   Its continuous broadcasting.   It might have been one of these frequencies.    (sorry, this is really trying my memory.   I'll eventually find the right thing if you don't first).

My SB is on the fritz...

This is the service I've been using. Prices have really come down. $99 for a year.

This is a sample of what I used to get. I may have to buy it again this year.

That map would be avail for free via the SB.   There is actually a closer one that is free.   The sample you sent is showing about 120 miles of area which is fine for plotting a general area to head towards.    I found these dataasets for Chesapeak Bay, so there is definately sets somewhere for your area:
http://coastwatch.chesapeakebay.noaa.gov/edac/goes/data/
that data works with this program:
http://coastwatch.noaa.gov/cw_cwfv3.html#download

Since your SB is down, you should be able to get data via download and use the CoastWatch program to view/print as needed.

Here is a list of HDF resources:
http://www.nsof.class.noaa.gov/glossary/CW_REGION.htm

You might have to email NOAA and ask them where you can download the most current ocean temperature charts (HDF format) in your area.   Highest res possible, otherwise they will give you the whole east cost file which is useless.   Its public information, its just hard to find the link.

Sure, its sophomoric, juvenile, and really low brow...

But so are most of us  Wink

LOL!!  I didn't even see that!    now thats funny!

Also, GEOS has a new project which is going to be really nice.   GOES Surface and Insolation Products (GSIP) which went live on April 2, 2009.   Its a high spatial resolution (1/8 x 1/8 degrees) which does cloud coverage and skin temperature data.   This might be real good for ocean temps?

So much data, so little understanding of what everything is.   I wish I knew more to tell you exactly which file goes with what.    But trust me, what you are paying for...you can get for free and a much higher res.

I've been interested in this very much myself ever since I had free dtv for 2 years. Ohh man do I miss the 900 some channels for free, it was all good until i got the letter saying i was going to get sued:?  The company I bought my NOT so legal programming equipment from got busted and had to give up all their purchase records. Been scared of the whole thing ever since.
