His point is more that there's evidence suggesting that other planets may have been capable of sustaining life in the past and that they no longer can. Science is important to slow, reverse, and prevent other issues that could end life on the planet (even enough time).
It's one of the reasons that we need to encourage more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) graduates in the United States (We graduate less than 1/10th of the minimum number we need each year by the way... which is apart of the reason jobs are outsourced.)... It's also the reason that we need to increase funding to NASA (who's discovered nearly all of the most important technology's that we use everyday).
