Stogie Chat Members Aren't Cool
#1
We all know that cigarettes have an image problem these days. You don’t see them very much in films anymore—even the villains seem to have kicked the habit. But when it comes to cigars, that’s not the case. Many people still think cigars are cool. The notion is helped by pictures of elegant men in tuxedos and a few famous women puffing away at their cigars—think of those much-circulated photos of Demi Moore and Madonna. Cigars even show up in films made for younger moviegoers. Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Quantum of Solace, and Wolverine all feature cigar-smoking.

Indeed, the American Cancer Society notes that cigars are especially popular today among adolescents and young adults. That includes all manner of cigars: hand- and machine-rolled, stogies and cigarillos.

Cigar smokers may think they’re taking less of a risk than cigarette smokers. That’s wrong, mostly. While it’s true that most cigar smokers do not inhale all the way, smoking cigars is linked to cancers that develop along the route the smoke travels—from the lips to the tongue and through the mouth and throat to the lungs.

Beyond that, smoking cigars has been shown to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer, heart disease, and lung disease.

Secondhand cigar smoke poses another danger—even more so than with cigarettes. As the National Cancer Institute points out, cigars contain greater amounts of tobacco simply as a result of their bigger size. It also takes longer to puff your way through a cigar, meaning that the exposure time to toxic chemicals lasts longer.

Finally, because of the way cigars are wrapped, the smoke has higher concentrations of toxins and irritants than cigarettes. A Journal of Exposure Analysis and Environmental Epidemiology study found higher levels of the toxin carbon monoxide at two cigar social events in San Francisco than on a busy California freeway.

As for nicotine—the chemical that gets you hooked on smoking—cigars contain greater concentrations of it than cigarettes. For a large cigar, it can be up to 200 milligrams. That’s 23 times the amount of nicotine in a typical cigarette. The difference is that cigar smokers—most of whom don’t inhale smoke into their lungs—absorb the smoke through the lining of the mouth.

About a third of new teenage smokers start after being exposed to smoking in movies. Talk to your kids. Remind them that smoking cigars isn’t cool.

(advance notice - this is another rant; I am feeling particularly verbose today...)

Great, another "smoking is bad for you so you should quit because it's bad for you so there you yucky poo poo head" article.

Look, I will agree with you that cigar smoking carries along with it certain elements that are detrimental to one's physical health.  The human body was not designed to process smoke... and I accept that.  I accept that I may be putting myself at risk for an increased chance of... whatever disease or illness you wish to fill in the blank with...  but it's my life, it's my choice, so back off.

may also slip and break my neck in the bathtub tomorrow.  I may get hit by a car.  I may be struck by a bolt of lightning by the Almighty for not saying "God bless you" when someone sneezes.  I can tell you this for sure though: If I lived a completely healthy, pure, clean-intake life with no distractions I would definitely snap from all the stress; that would be hazardous not only to my health but also all innocent bystanders within a ten mile radius.

You don't like it.  It's not your bag.  I get it, and that's cool... but I've already given you all the indoor locations in CA.  I don't even smoke in public anymore with all the dirty looks I get!  Please, just let me drink and smoke in my backyard in peace without you shoving your morals down my throat.

I consider myself a reasonable person, and my standards are not that hard to meet: as long as you're not hurting anybody, however you want to live your life is cool with me.  But since you've offered your opinion, allow me to extend my own:

It's life, so live a little.  You just might enjoy it.

Damn, I thought I was being cool.  Oh well, nice knowing you guys, but I quit, now that I know its not cool.

I think I will take up knitting, oh, but those needles are sharp, and I cut stab myself.

Maybe I will start painting, be an artist.  Nope, no good, the fumes from the paint are probably known to cause cancer in the state of California.

Thumb wrestling?  nope, too much human contact, could pass on diseases like the swine flu, sars or worse.

I think I am just going to live in a bubble, with no contact to the outside world.  I will only eat natural foods, and of course no animal meat.  I will not be happy until I shit dust.  Gotta go, my neighbor is mowing his lawn, so that means salad for dinner.  Yummy.

But what about all the third hand smoke in stinky clothes in which a cigar was smoked or car, or room?  Confusedhock:
The article fails to mention that! I better write them and inform them of their error!

and what about *gasp* forth hand smoke!  I'm not sure what it is, but we'll find it!

Of course smoking is not healthy, who cares.

I am not smoking cigars for my health or for anyone elses approval.  Just accept the risks and conseqeunces, if any, for yourself.

Just enjoy [smokin2]

I read an article about the smoke nazis and Hollywood in an issue of Cigar Magazine.  those people need to get a frickin life.  Kojak always had a lollypop, but you dont see groups for banning candy.  What about all the people on Tv and in the movies eating fast food?  Last time I checked, the US was the fattest country in the world.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #b9af9f"Ever see that movie "Supersize me"?  That guy ate McDonalds every day for a month and almost died, his liver was starting to shut down.  How many of us smoke one, or more times a day.  How are you after a month?  Probably just broke because you smoked 30 or more sticks and now need to replenish.  The media is stupid, thats why I watch the Simpsons and Family Guy instead of the news.
