Cigar smokers may think theyâre taking less of a risk than cigarette smokers. Thatâs wrong, mostly. While itâs true that most cigar smokers do not inhale all the way, smoking cigars is linked to cancers that develop along the route the smoke travelsâfrom the lips to the tongue and through the mouth and throat to the lungs. This is funny... Cigarette smokers actually are exposed to the same dangers yet no one ever made an issue of it. No commercial saying "this is your tongue, this is your tongue on cigarettes". It's a worthless argument. Beyond that, smoking cigars has been shown to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. In many studies given the proper controls there has been no conclusive link between any type of cancer to cigar smoke. Secondhand cigar smoke poses another dangerâeven more so than with cigarettes. As the National Cancer Institute points out, cigars contain greater amounts of tobacco simply as a result of their bigger size. It also takes longer to puff your way through a cigar, meaning that the exposure time to toxic chemicals lasts longer. This is really funny... Cigars don't contain tar. Nor is the tobacco chemically dried (a leading cause for carcinogens in cigarettes). This is total non-founded hogwash. Finally, because of the way cigars are wrapped, the smoke has higher concentrations of toxins and irritants than cigarettes. A Journal of Exposure Analysis and Environmental Epidemiology study found higher levels of the toxin carbon monoxide at two cigar social events in San Francisco than on a busy California freeway. Co2? is this the best they can come up with? Oh wait... a cigar event... With over say 30 cigars burning in 1 room? Something that happens 3 or 4 times a year in a cigar smokers life? And the best you can compare it to is a freeway? Happens every damn day for hours and hours on end. Ban the cars then we can talk about cigars. As for nicotineâthe chemical that gets you hooked on smokingâcigars contain greater concentrations of it than cigarettes. For a large cigar, it can be up to 200 milligrams. Thatâs 23 times the amount of nicotine in a typical cigarette. The difference is that cigar smokersâmost of whom donât inhale smoke into their lungsâabsorb the smoke through the lining of the mouth. yes. A valid point. Yet notice the lack of dangers pointed out. Heck, it is this nicotine that has made me a prolific cigar smoker. About a third of new teenage smokers start after being exposed to smoking in movies. Talk to your kids. Remind them that smoking cigars isnât cool. I agree. The average kid looks like a dork as he tries to look cool with a cigar in his mouth or hand. Someone just needs to teach them how to hold it, how to puff it then they too can look cool!
