zip chain inspired
#1
So... I just learned that Zippo makes what I have been yearning for. A lanyard/chain for their lighters. Called a zip chain. Except it's around $20 and I'm not sure it's exactly what I want...
My first inspiration was for my buddy Dom. He keeps most of his possessions that he carries around with him on a lanyard around his neck. Except his lighter. Last Friday he left his lighter at the club. I noticed his keys and cutter was on his lanyard... So.... All he needs is some sort of eye to connect to his lanyard.
Then it hit me.
So, here's my idea. I intend to pull the hinge pin from a zippo then insert another pin only a longer one. The portion of the pin sticking out I'll fashion into a loop or eye. I'll pull it out, solder it up then insert it back in and secure it some way...
So, when I get my house back in order, maybe a few more weeks, this will be on my project list.(along with rebuilding 26 reels that were under salt water for 3 hours during the storm)

Skip, I'll get the zip chain out tonight and play around with it and let you know what I think... and if I find any flaws or things you should keep in mind!

Skip, that sounds like a great idea!

John, here is your answer. A Stainless wire bent into a V and used in the hinge pin.

I've seen a few custom versions of these over the years, a couple of guys who used to ride with us had really nice engraved versions.

They had a belt loop as opposed to the steel clip on the rear though, so maybe it was an older version or a bespoke piece based on the Zippo version.

either way, it could be worn around the neck as Hairy Pete used to wear his around his neck at rallies when he decided to walk around in his shorts and flip flops.
