Camacho Liberty 2008
Wrapper: Corojo and Colorado barber pole
Binder: Honduran
Filler: Honduran
Size: 6x56
Libation: Sam Adams Summer Ale
Prelight
Absolute beautiful barber pole wrapper and the 11/18 size is one of my favorites.
The feel was right in between. Not too hard not that soft. Just right.
The smell was Cedary and woody. The prelight draw was at tad floral with a definite tobacco taste.
First Third
I cut this beautiful cigar with my Xikar cutter and Xikar Dual Flame Lighter. Toasted the foot and took my initial puffs which I wasn't that enamored with. Tasted kind of mild to me on both my palate and on the retro hale. After about the first half inch it got better. It could be that I was getting more of the dark wrapper. The flavor got a bit richer and the retro hale was a bit peppery. Not overpowering just a tad spicier. I would say its medium bodied. Dark chocolate, coffee and a woody flavors on the palate. A mild pepper on the retro hale was evident. The burn was beautiful. Straight as an arrow. No burn issues at all.
Second Third
The taste profile in the second third didn't change much. The flavor got a bit richer. The retro hale was more to my liking. The pepper went to a more black pepper than the mild white pepper I was getting. The burn line got a bit jagged but still in the excellent category for construction. Draw was still great. No tunneling, no canoeing.
Final Third
The dark part of the wrapper started to crack a bit, as you can see in the picture. I've had this in my humidor for three years and in the Cleveland area humidity fluctuated crazily over the past three winters. So I wouldn't blame Camacho for this one. The flavors went mild on me again. Even the retro hale lost a lot of its luster. The only different flavor I got was a bread/wheat taste that I didn't get on the previous two thirds. The burn line was a bit jagged mainly because of the wrapper cracking and needed a little touching up.
Conclusion
I have a lot of thoughts on this cigar. I wish I would have smoked one of these back in 2008 to see what changes have occured after 3 years of aging. I think this cigar would probably be more to "my" liking the year it comes out. I love rich flavors and they seem to lose a lot of richness as cigars age. That being said, if this is the way the cigar is supposed to taste I wouldn't be buying boxes of these. Even if I had a lot of cash. They're just not in my wheel house in terms of flavors. It might be in somebody else's, just not mine. I tend to gravitate towards more full bodied/flavored sticks like LFD DL and Oliva Serie V, which kind of jades me a bit. The construction and aesthetics of this cigar were excellent. The ash was a bit flaky, but that's just so minor. If I had to give this a rating it would be an 8 on a 10 scale.
