Warlock
#1
Warlock by Altais - I have smoked numerous sticks of these and enjoyed it every time, but until now really I hadn't closely examined it.

Robusto 4 ¾ x 54
Wrapper: Equadorian Cubano
Filler: Dominican Republic and Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Full Bodied Cigar
Cost: about $5-6 retail

Atmosphere:
Time: 12 noon (about 1 ½ hours to smoke)
Temperature: 87° start – 93° finish
Humidity: 23% start – 21% finish
Time in Humidor: 4 months
Libation: Ice Water

Pre-light:
Upon smelling the wrapper, I noted a creamy, caramelized sugar scent with hints of very light chili pepper. The wrapper is a light chocolate brown color with a nice slightly oily sheen. Upon smelling the foot, I noted scents of dry hay, much like straw. The pre-draw had a manure smell. I cut it with a Palió Burlwood cutter, and I used my Vector triple flame lighter to light up the foot.

First Inch:
This cigar is a pepper bomb right from the start, very robust spice flavor that give you a wallop of black pepper. The retro-hale was also a strong dose of spice. It starts with a kick. The finish was a combination of pepper and cedar. The ash burned a charcoal gray. I started with an uneven burn because of a slight wind and because it was hard to see the blue flame in the bright sunlight. However, in a short time, the burned evened right out, and it was a razor line from then on to the end.

Second Inch:
As I got through the first inch, the pepper backed off completely and transitioned to a sweeter spice, more of a chili pepper flavor. The retro-hale also sweetened to a light peppery spice. The finish was creamy with hints of vanilla. The ash remained firm and constant, needing a little pressure to knock it off, and it had a razor line burn. Throughout the cigar, I found that I needed to take several puffs to produce an ample amount of smoke, but it did produce a nice aromatic cloud.

Third Inch:
The spice backed off completely and moved into coffee and cream flavors. I really started to enjoy the cigar more as I continued to smoke through it. The retro-hale was a very pleasant rose floral aroma that had the same creamy floral finish. It was not a sweet floral scent, but more like that of rose or lily (a more pungent flower). The ash remained firm and even. I still had to draw on the cigar several times to produce good smoke.

Fourth inch:
As the floral backed off, stronger notes of a dark roasted coffee emerged. The retro-hale had flavors of charred aromatic wood (cedar and elm). It really picked up that more robust flavor. The finish was noticeably smooth. It was quite pleasant. It continued to produce a charcoal gray ash with a steady burn line.

The nub:
The stronger coffee and woody flavors began to mellow into a coffee and cream taste. With about a half-inch left, I pitched it due to burning fingers. The cigar never became bitter, but maintained the mild coffee and cream until I couldn’t smoke it any more.

Conclusion:
Altadis may draw some raised eyebrows by some, but I believe they put a little extra care into the blending of this cigar. It is a departure from the more generic lines they generally produce. It is not an expensive smoke, yet it is well-crafted. I bought a box of these back in March of 2011, and I will be replenishing the box when I am out. A box at J-R Cigars, which seems the only place online I have found that sells these will cost you about $100-$110.

I got one of these for Max at his local Smoker Friendly (they had a really awesome walk-in humi) after he said he wanted to try them. He enjoyed it Smile
