Temporary Storage
#1
Hey all. I've just purchased my first Humidor and batch of cigars.

I got the PUCK 50, a Boveda seasoning kit, and Boveda Hygrometer kit.

The seasoning kit says to put the two 84% packets into the humidor for 14 days.

My question is: Can I store my cigars in a Tupperware container with a sponge or dish of water for 14 days, without harming the cigars?

If your cigars are in cellophane I would suggest a method I've used to revive some literally ancient (deacades old) cigars.

Get a big ziploc bag, and soak a paper towel in distilled water. Put the cigars in the bad with the moist towel. DO NOT LET THE BARE CIGARS TOUCH THE TOWEL. If they are in cellophane there is less risk.

Keepin yor cigars in a closed Tupperware container for a couple weeks won't hurt anything.

I recommend using beads for humidification and a good digital hygrometer.
Get beads here....

put them in a small plastic container with holes in the lid, I use 65% ones.
moisten beads with spray bottle of distilled water(from dollar store)untill they are clear,no standing water in bottom of container.

For proper seasoning of your humidor read this thread...

I have my cigars in a Tupperware container for the two weeks, I put a humidifier in with them and a digital hygrometer.

The humidity stays around 81% and the temp is around 68-71.

I open the container for a few minutes, a couple times a day. Will this high of humidity cause me problems?

I still have seven days to go, before the humidifier is ready.

For that short period, probably not, but I would lower the humidity if you can. 81 is too high..

No,it is fine, when in Tupperware it is so air tight you need to exchange the air every few days.

When you are ready do put your cigars in your humidor make sure that the RH in your humidor is reasonable (no more than 70%; I prefer 65% myself).

If the RH is high, let it air out a little bit -- leave the it open for 10 minutes or so, and check the RH in a four hours. Repeat as needed.

The thing to remember about cigars and humidors is patience. RH does not change quickly (thanks for that, otherwise we would have a bunch of split wrappers on our cigars).

And, while you are waiting for all this to come together, don't forget to enjoy a cigar (or two) Smile. Don't be afraid to open up your tupperware container every now and then.
