Do you ever blow cigar smoke through your nostrils?

When I explain to people how one can NOT inhale a cigar the analogy I always use is "You can draw a drink into your mouth with a straw and not inhale the drink can't you?"

Well the same is true with the nostrils.
Ever seen a kid make milk come out his nose?

I guarantee that milk never touched his lungs.

I saw a kid do whole potato sticks through his nose and I once shot a digested Taco Bell bean burrito out my nose.  Yup neither went into the lungs.

The smacking you do actually lifts the taste bud up due to any friction/stickness inside your mouth, this allows it to pick up more taste as opposed to the amount it may receive when laying down on your tounge.
