Very nice Parkster!  May I ask what the significance is of the different patterns?  Does every family have a unique design?

Yes is the short answer.

Every clan has an every day Tartan and a dress Tartan, there are also Tartans that can be worn by many clans through association. On this occasion I am wearing a multi-clan Tartan that was released on the millenium, its name is Pride Of Scotland, and it can be worn by anybody.

The Tartans I am most permitted to wear through my family heritage are MacDonald, McKinnon and Royal Stewart, and I tend to wear the dress Stewart most of the time as I prefare the reds and Blacks mixture as opposed to the greens of the McKinnon.
