OK...so my wife works at an outpatient clinic for substance abuse that pays every 2 weeks. She never received her check last week (nor did any other employee) with no explanation other than they didn't have time to print the checks. Normally they receive checks on Thuhrsday. No checks again on Friday. Come Monday, Jaclyn was at work and learned there were still no checks...and still no explanations. We heard through the "grapevine" in the substance abuse field in our community that there was no money. They are under investigation for medicaid fraud and there was a freeze put on all monies from medicaid to this clinic. The employer didn't keep a payroll budget and relied soley on medicaid checks to pay employees -- no medicaid checks...no paychecks. STILL - the employer has not come forward with this information. Monday afternoon, the clinical director offers every employee a letter of termination "in case anyone would like one for unemployment purposes". Not knowing any better, several people took a letter. NOW, not only is Jaclyn left without a job...by her having documentation that she has been terminated, the employer is not responsible for paying the many, many acrued vacation hours. Oh...and by the way -- you of course don't need such a letter to collect unemployment. Interesting, huh? Now by Tuesday I am on the phone with the dept of labor, the state licensing agency for such businesses, lawyers...blah blah blah. Long story longer - we can't do anything.
Good news...Jaclyn has been paid for the 2 weeks (no one else has...but the squeaky wheel gets the grease) AND the best news of all...she was kind of stuck there. Ultimately the unprofessional and unethical ways of the employer caught up to them and they are being closed down. Now, she is free and empowered to spread her wings a bit. She is really fantastic at what she does and deserves better. Bad news...money is tight. Worst news...there are a lot of displaced alcoholics and addicts that may not make it to another program sober. There are families that relied on that income to provide for their families.
Don't feel bad for us - we are happy and healthy. Cassie is healing tremendously and if this is the biggest problem we have today - Man, are we blessed. Have a great weekend!!!!!
