Yes, there is.

America. As it used to be, when I was young...

I believe it was Frank Zappa who said that history is nostalgia with the rust painted over.  The past was never as good as it seems nor is the future as bleak as it appears.  Same old story day after day.  Times don't change only us.  Music becomes too loud.  Hair too long.  Price of goods too expensive.  Same story different day.  Listen to ourselves.  This was cheaper.  That was better.  How long before we walked to school.  Uphill.  Both ways.  In a hurricane.

Quote:Apologize to France and Germany.  Please.  The French who have run both sides of the fence for so long they no longer know where the fence is.  The Germans?  Muder 6 million.  Yeah it's ok.  No problem.  Try to take over the world?  Twice.  No problem.

[AND]

Maybe we do have a tragedy in america today.  Maybe we as americans are not worth by our actions the incredible bounty we have been blessed with through the efforts of men and women we seem to know so much better than.  Forget mandatory enlistment.  We should have mandatory migration.  Each citizen should live for one year in the third world.  Then come back on your hands and knees and count your blessings.
So, Germany's actions over the last 60 years haven't proven they're a great ally and good country?  They're more free and more democratic than we are. I think it's time to let WWII die.

Where is France on both sides? They've got boots on the ground with U.S. forces, RIGHT NOW, in Afghanistan. That doesn't seem like "playing both sides" to me. It seems more like an ally doing an ally's job. The fact that we're heaping shit on an ally because they were right about Iraq and we were wrong is hubris.

The entire civilized world backed us to the hilt on Afghanistan. Just not on Iraq. Because Iraq was a stupid, futile exercise in penis-wagging on the part of the U.S. Executive branch, and most of the world knew it.

--------------

As for your third world comment: Been there. Done that. Rwanda, 1992.

And I sure as hell did not come back on my hands and knees as a beggar. My rage against our current government is because it is becoming more and more like Rwanda's and less and less like the government of my forebears.

Rwanda is in the shape they're in because the government thinks it's above the law. It's full of cronies and nepotism. Everything revolves around the military. Just like the Bush administration.

You know how to cook a frog, don't you? Big Grin

But if you don't like an example from the past of what a democratic country should and could be, how about a few from the present?

Sweden, Denmark, Norway.

Higher standard of living than the good ol' [usa] even WITH 40% of wages going to taxes. Because what THEY get with THEIR taxes isn't corporate welfare, foreign misadventures, and more bombs . . . no, they get things like health care, education, retirement, a social safety net, and infrastructure investment.

It's called democratic socialism. Rush waves it around to scare the dittoheads, but it DOES work. Really well.

Those are all more homogenous, less diverse, smaller countries than us. It's possible it couldn't work here, and almost certain that the giant megacorporations that actually run our government would never allow it here. But it's living, vibrant proof that socialism, so long a dirty word here, CAN and DOES work in a free society, without impeding personal liberties or leading to communism or dogs and cats humping each other or anything. Wink

What gets me about the dittoheads is that they have no problem with the concept of a socialized police force, socialized schools or a socialized fire department.

But socialized medicine? Oooooohhhhhhh, Scary!

It's pathetic how easily the dittoheads can be led -- just mention homosexuals, "support the troops" or Jesus and they'll follow anyone, elect any nincompoop, even vote away their own jobs.

The most pathetic part -- Then they'll willingly and unabashedly act as cheerleaders for the leaders who hold them in such obvious contempt, all because they're afraid of two guys in San Francisco going down on each other.

Suckers.

Yeah, because conservatives NEVER do that . . . [really]

[lol]

It's all good, Jan. Reasonable men may reasonably agree to disagree. But we would all benefit from listening more, I suspect.
