Seasoned Humidor....now what?
#31
I'm back and still having a problem with my humidor Sad  I have not been successful in lowering the humidty level.  It is hovering at around 78 percent.  The humidifier itself is not in the humidor.  I took it out 3-4 days ago and haven't put it back since.  I put about half-dozen cigars in the box, at the suggestion of others in this thread, in the hopes that it would draw some of the moisture out.  That hasn't worked either.  I'm using a digital hygrometer which seems to calibrated as measured against other devices in my house (thermostat, etc).  Others having similar problems have used Propylene Glycol in the humidifier (a 50% solution of PG and distilled water) with success.   I trust this forum more than others and look for experienced wisdom here.  Has anyone tried this method?  And how do I insure that I'm using 50% distilled water and 50% PG?  I can't pull the sponge out of the humidifier to wring it out or anything (or can I?)

I don't think your humidifier has a sponge. Most likely it is green florist foam, and you can not wring it out, it will not reshape it self.

Are you positive your hydrometer is accurate? If you have not calibrated it to check, I suggest you do so before going any further.  Two methods can be used to do this.

Read this thread for the first method.

The second method you could buy a calibration kit.

The first one would be cheaper, but if not done right will not work.

If your hydrometer is working correctly then leave your humidor open for a day and let it release excess moisture.

I have used these in my humis with no problems.

The beads are great, they will help absorb excessive humidity when dry.  Use them dry to get the rh down.  Then wet them so about half of the beads are white to keep the rh constant.
