Cigar Ordering Dilemma - Tatsumi67 - 03-30-2010
Okay so I ordered 40 cigars of various types which are sure to be delicious from Famous [Trust me my next order will be from TBS] but here is the problem.
The schedules delivery is April 1st, the day I leave for an Easter vacation. There will be a friend of the family we asked to feed the cat to take the package, but the question is what to do with it when she gets it. I will be back in town Sunday the 4th. Should I ask her to put it into a bag with a humidipack? Do I need to worry about what happens to them in a cardboard box for three days?

where do you live? how long of a transit is it from famous? i've learned that almost every package that comes to me from ups comes a day early. maybe 1 in 10 don't get here a day earlier than the scheduled day. after that, i wouldn't worry about it too much. it certainly wouldn't hurt to put them in a humipack, but if you can't get it in one, don't worry about it. i mean, when you think about it, you don't worry about it getting to you in that ups truck, and it goes through way more temperature fluctuations than you will put it through. over mountains, sitting in the truck all night long, etc... and your sticks survive all that just fine, i wouldn't worry about them sitting in the box until you get home. you just might have to let them acclimate in your humi for a few extra days.

In my experience with Famous, the smokes are never 70/70 or anywhere close. I've bought bundles,boxes, five packs, and singles. The smokes rarely arrive at the "proper" smoking condition. So unless you want a head start, I'd say let it ride. In other words, just listen to Scott.

I would cancel the trip, and set up camp on the front porch. Set up a rotating watch schedule to be sure nothing gets by you. Night vision may be useful, as well as trip wires on the back door, the garage, and any other entrances you cant monitor. When the delivery guy shows up, throw a net on him and put him and the package into the humidor at once. You cant afford to waste any time. This is precious cargo we are talking about, and the man in Brown should know what he signed up for.

You can ask your neighbor to store them in the bathroom for the few short days. That is typically the most humid room.
I used to ask my mom to do that when I had stuff delivered there. just as long as they understand not someplace where it will get actually wet. (my mom had a make-up cove that was perfect)
