- JoeBob - 05-15-2006 The more cigars I smoke....the less impressed I am with the whole Fuente to-do. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing like a Hemingway, Opus....and I like them a lot. But, I'm smoking Punch Gran Puros, LGC's, Partagas Blacks, RP's, and your occasional habanos and davidoffs...and find myself reaching for the Fuente products less and less. There's times I'm ready to go out to the bar, with a Consuega in one hand, an Opus in the other, and can't decide what to take. We haven't had a good Rob vs. Fuente thread in SCv2 yet, so I thought I'd start one up now, because I'm starting to see his point of view. Thoughts? - LC stogiechat homebrew gnome - 05-15-2006 I don't think I am any less impressed w/ fuente products, but there are times where I think some of the price tags area a bit rediculous. the prices I hear for a Casa Fuente amaze me, as well as the GOF and even some of the rare fuentes, like the Untold Story, which goes around here for $17 a pop, and that's probably the lowest on the list I just rattled off. I think the Chateau Fuente maduro will most likely forever be one of my favorite go to smokes, I look forward to buying many more boxes of them. Every time I have an anjeo or an Opus, it has been an experience of sheer and utter smoking joy. And I look forward to trying a Casa or a GOF, but w/ so many of the good smokes like what you described above, Joe, I know many others will come before those. Also, I think that's part of the fun of this hobby, is learning about all the different kinds of smokes you like, and everything about that cigar, it's tobacco, the family that grew it in these different regions, the list goes on for a mile. I know that if I buy an Opus or a Padron 1926, for example, either of these is most likely to be a flawless smoking experience. A lot of other smokes can offer great smoking experiences for less money, and for me, that's part of the fun as well, finding either the great deals or even the diamonds in the ruff that just need a few years in the humi to develop correctly. - Fishpoop - 05-15-2006 I jumped hard on the opus band wagon, but that is really all I smoke from the Fuente line, well I do have a box of GOF's now but that is it. Otherwise I like the CAO, Torano, and such a little more.
- Headley - 05-15-2006 LC is right on with his observations but I'll add this: Don't underestimate the effect aging will have on mellowing/melding/improving a cigar. To me, it's like the Cuban "twang" that I didn't really understand until I gave a Monte #2 a year in the humi and began to appreciate it more. Also, consider how much your palate will change over the time that cigar is aging. I have found myself looking for hints that a cigar will "age well" and really didn't get it until recently. I still find myself reaching for an RP vintage, RP Edge, CAO Italia, Punch, Padron, Camacho, etc...more often than anything else because I have not been doing this long enough to develop my tastes fully and these cigars taste better to me right now. To LC's point, I can now appreciate an Opus X, Anejo, Habanos more now than I could have a year or two ago but I won't smoke them daily. They are a cigar I can reach for to see how it's developed over time and that's really a cool thing to me. It's 50% enoyment of buying it and being able to smoke it TODAY and 50% enjoyment of collecting the cigar and letting it develop. That's why it's a hobby to all of us and not a habit. It's still a matter of "to each his own" so when I find a cigar I enjoy I will seek it out for different reasons. Smoke it today or smoke it tomorrow. - FSU Stogie - 05-15-2006 Very well put headley, I find that I am a huge fan of the Opus and other high end fuentes, but it will never, regardless of my wealth, become an everyday smoke. I like collecting, but I also like rotating and switching up flavors and such. The hemmingways, on the other hand, with their good prices and even better tastes, have seemed to make it into my everydays. While price may, at this time, dictate when I choose which cigars, if it was not an issue, I am not sure how much my prefrences or picks would change (allthough if money was not an issue the quantities would deffinately change lol) -Ben - Mark - 05-15-2006 Joebob, you do have a point. I find that there are better cigars out there for the money and there is alot of hype around Fuente products, but you do have to admit they make a good product and the quality is very good. Headley also made a great point about the aging potential of high end Fuente products. Give an Opus or Anejo a year or two and you will be amazed. As far as an everyday smoke, I find that I smoke atleast one Anejo a day. It is just something about that cigar that I can't get enough of. - bartok - 05-15-2006 I think Fuentes are great, but sometimes they just seem too "busy" for me. There are times when I want a straightforward cigar without a lot of complex overtones and without much subtlety. If your tastes are like mine, there are plenty of cigars that offer good flavor for a whole lot less. - Djaric - 05-15-2006 I agree. Feuentes are rather hit and miss with me as well. Usually they are good, but not always. (Although that can usually be atributed to being a bit fresh/ too wet) But there are plenty of other tastey cigars out there. ![]() - ScrooLoose - 05-15-2006 I can't say I have tried any of those cigars, but I can say that as you smoke better and better cigars, your tastes do change. I remember a week into my return to cigars, I went from the mild one's I had been ordering, to trying a Partagas Maduro... I thought I was going to be physically ill. But, I kept on with it, and now 4 months into my collection, and that Partagas Maduro that gave me trouble is one damn fine cigar... - Rob The Long Island Cowboy - 05-15-2006 JoeBob Wrote:... because I'm starting to see his point of view.
