 HUMIDOR FLUID - “PG”

A humidor has to be maintained to properly store your cigars.  Every time you open your humidor you will loose some humidity to the air.  Temperature changes, the seal on your humidor, and many other factors outside of your control will demand that you do check your humidor fluid levels on a regular basis.  Depending on the quality of your humidor and how often you open the humidor, you may need to add fluids every couple weeks, or months. Putting “drier” cigars in your humidor will also cause the humidity to drop, as the humidor is doing its job and putting humidity into the cigars to bring them up to the right levels.

Humidor Solution "PG"Humidor Solution "PG"PG (Propylene Glycol) is a special fluid that is ideal for cigar storage!  It has qualities which add humidity to the air if the humidity is less than 70%. It also helps prevent bacteria buildup which can cause problems with your cigars.  PG Fluid can be purchased in pure 100% form, or a mix of 50% PG and 50% distilled water.

PG fluid should NEVER be used in its pure form in your humidor.  It should be mixed with DISTILLED water (not tap water or filtered water).

Once you use a PG & distilled water mix in your humidor, you only need to add distilled water on occasion when your humidor will not maintain the 68-70% level.  The PG fluid does not evaporate!!  Over time PG become less useful, normally after 10-12 months.  In which case you should replace your humidification unit if it does not seem to want to accept distilled water anymore.  Eventually all humidification units / sponges become plugged up with contaminates and need replaced.  You don’t need a new humidor...just a new humidification disc/unit.

SPECIAL NOTE: Propylene Glycol is MUCH different from Ethylene Glycol which is used in your cars radiator system. DO NOT use Ethylene Glycol in your cigar humidor because it is toxic and will cause medical problems or death.

There are also electronic / battery operated humidification systems available for your humidor.  One of the most common is the cigar Oasis system.

Some units require their own blend of fluids or they will not work properly. For any electronic humidification system, always make sure what type of fluids are required before adding distilled water, PG, or anything else or you may damage the unit or it may not work as it should!
