Scottish Premier League - All over for Gretna

Eurosport -

The Scottish Football League has called for applications from new clubs after confirming that Gretna have relinquished their status as an SFL club.

Gretna were forced into resigning after a painful financial struggle that saw the Scottish Premier League club plummet down the divisions following their administration in March.

An SFL spokesman said: "I have this morning received intimation from the Gretna FC administrator of their resignation from the Scottish Football League with immediate effect.

"I have accepted this resignation on behalf of the Scottish Football League and accordingly, we now have a vacancy in the Third Division and are seeking applications."

Paying tribute to Gretna, an announcement of the SFL's official website read: "Gretna FC made a significant contribution to the Scottish Football League when they were members."

Gretna, who played minor league football in England until joining the SFL in 2002, charged through the divisions to reach the SPL, making the Scottish Cup final in 2006 and playing in the UEFA Cup.

Their first taste of the top flight was short-lived, however, as they finished bottom of the standings this season to be relegated and, after multi-millionaire backer Brooks Mileson pulled out, were placed in administration, which earned them a 10-point deduction.

Last week they were relegated to the Scottish third division because of their perilous financial situation.

Administrators have been unable to find a buyer for the club and have been trying to sell the ground in a bid to meet debts.
