Well, here it comes . . .

Yeah, but what the heck's he gonna do? Open the door to run an extension cord out to the generator in the middle of a hurricane?

Power just doesn't stay down long enough to make it worthwhile, most of the time.

Yeah, the Galveston side of Houston is all coastal Low Country, built on bayou and swamp . . . and that's where it looks like Ike will hit. They're gonna have a pretty rough weekend of it. If Ike doesn't turn as much as expected, Matagorda Bay will take the brunt instead, and we'll get it worse here . . . right now looks like it'll be 50 mph winds, 6' storm surge, and heavy rains and thunderstorms tonight through about Monday for us.

During HUGO in Charleston, I was ecstatic to have a generator. We didn't have power for 17 days

My good friend has a beach house in  Galveston. I stayed there.  He's up in Houston and is hoping he still has a place when he returns.

Be safe and good luck!  Generators are a must if you live in a rural area (like I always have and will continue to do).  We are the last to get power after a big storm.  When Fran hit we had no power for over 2 weeks.  Us "country folk" keep deep freezers full of produce and meat - no power makes a big mess of that...  The storm hit in the middle of the tobacco curing in the barn - they sent generators from Fort Bragg to keep the fans running in the curing barns (did not help us in the house though - we had a small generator for that).  Now I keep a Miller Big Blue 251D Diesel welder/generator for suck emergencies... too bad it ate a valve about a month ago [curse] just in time for hurricane season too...
