Quote:Ok soccer fans, I need some explaining please. I was just in the well run contest that Aracos put together for the UEFA Cup. (Thanks Lonnie and Congrats ColbyPants) Anyway I was wondering what the difference between the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League is. I see that Manchester United is playing Barcelona today at 2 on ESPN and was a little confused while they were advertising it. Is it similar to minor and major leagues here in the states?
All Prof. Soccer runs under the org UEFA...
The Champions League takes the top teams from the previous yr from all the various countries of Europe and has a long playoff for the Champions Cup. Some have to qualify some are automatic bids into the league.
The next step down is the UEFA Cup. It has the teams that didn't quite win there assoc. championships. Some countries get more entries into the Champs League and same with the Cup. Some smaller countries have to go through the qualifying stages to make it in.
To really confuse things, next year there will also be a Euro Cup to boot...
If I had of thought about it, we would be starting another tourney today. The Copa Libertadores, South/Central American version of the Champions League playoffs leg 1 is today... We could still do it, the 2nd leg isn't till the 17th of next month, and we would still have the qtr, semi, & finals to play...
