"This new Surgeon General report describes how some tobacco companies' advertising practices are directed at younger people. For example, they say the companies are "strategically locating tobacco-related marketing materials where young children will be exposed to them" in convenience stores.

On Monday, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids along with the American Heart Association released a report called 'Deadly Alliance' detailing how tobacco companies market their products at convenience stores alongside safer products for children, like candy."


Lets not stop there! I have a gambling problem and they put all those damn lottery tickets in plain view next to the cigarettes. How is this different from tobacco being dispensed in a store behind a counter where there is limited space? Of course candy is sold next to the cashier! Its all quick point of sale items. But the anti-tobacco nazi's make is sound like tootsie rolls and Marlboros are part of some buy-one get one free special to introduce tobacco to kids! Do the condoms for sale behind the counter promote sex to minors because there are candy bars being sold only a few feet away? Fuckin morons!

I'm close to the Ohio state line which is loaded with little stores & gas stations. They sell alcohol in coolers, right in with the pop, ice tea, and juices where any kid could grab one. Pepsi, Mt. Dew, Straub, Coors Light, Apple Juice, Tea, Energy Drinks. Funny there is no problem with that in plain view and reach of a minor, but tobacco...which is dispensed only at the counter, is a problem for the anti-tobacco nazi groups.

I know what you are thinking....its CIGARETTES, who cares. Don't think cigars and other flavored tobacco is not on the chopping block. This photo was included in the report:

In Atlanta, GA the cigarette tax was going to be increased $1 per pack. Seems the public should be told about the increase. No taxation without representation, right?

Well, Phillip Morris wanted to make shoppers aware that its not them raising the price, but the state with another tax increase. They printed a notice on the backs of receipts to let folks know what was coming and advised them to contact their representatives to voice their comments.

       

As you can imagine, the State didn't like that kind of pressure. They like to silently jack up taxes without anyone bitching. Because the general public was better informed, there was quite a bit of pressure to not pass the tax.

So in this report they show how Phillip Morris and Krogers was "evil" by informing shoppers about the pending tax. The state banks on people not knowing about the tax until it hits, then it cannot be repealed. I guess the public has no right to know and should not be able to voice their concerns to our elected officials. If an elected official does not want to hear our concerns, then they are not representing me nor my tax dollars. They don't deserve my tax money, nor my vote.

Heck, they are even watching websites that are creating pressure for them.
   

How much money is wasted on this crap? Collecting information on what website is informing smokers of their taxes going up again. Bubble gum being on the same counter with condoms, lighters and some cigars. Nice to know that our tax dollars are hard at work while millions are unemployed, needing assistance, and loosing their homes. At least I know cigars will be at least 5 feet away from the Bubblicious gum!

Tobacco has been under fire for a long time. The movement is very organized and isn't going away anytime soon. They know that an outright outlaw of tobacco would cause an outrage and would not succeed so they slowly change the dynamics of where you can smoke and how you can buy your smokes and how much you pay. They are creating a society where smokers are made fun of and marginalized.

It is a double standard for sure. And I'm with you, I have no issues with cigarette taxes or tax increases. Although I feel for the businesses it harms, the health issues smokers typically encounter down the line and paid for by my medicare and medicaid taxes just don't sit quite right with me. So tax away, and at least recover as much of those medical bills as we can while we can.

But as to product placement, I agree. There is enough advertising, campaigning, and legislating now alerting EVERYONE to the dangers of smoking. It's no longer the "cool" thing to do, or a status symbol like it used to be. Leaving them in the store near the candy porno mags or condoms or anything else is just a matter of theft, and security. Of course the high dollar cigs are going to be in a protected spot of the store. And of course the high margin impulse buys are going to be right next to the counter. They're things you look at and go, hm, that would be a good idea right now.

On a side note, the condoms are usually located behind the counter next to the porno mags as well around here, and those aren't typically items purchased together. One or the other, not both. But for whatever reason the skin care lotion isn't located next to the mags. Someone should bring that up.

Not that I want to play a devils advocate here, but in thinking this over you are advocating a double standard. Cigarettes have filters, and paper, and a zillion chemicals added. But the primary component is still tobacco. You stick one end in your mouth and light the other end, just like a cigar.
You are also assuming that everyone (even the young people who have no clue) smoke like you and most of us, with not inhaling the cigar smoke. I know of one person from this forum that has told me that they inhale the smoke. How is that different or causing less effects than smoking a handful of [brand x] cigarettes a day?

I drink Jack Daniels, Windsor, and Canadian club. Sometimes straight, sometimes mixed with soda. It is awesome, it is great, and it cant hurt you because its made from boiled mash. But double or triple tax wine, because it is a horrible nasty drink, that can make you sick and act irresponsibly because its made from fermenting squashed grapes.

Exactly, so smoking is smoking no matter what it is. With "cigars" left in open display on the counter next to other quick point of sale items, that is why the FDA and the SG are attacking. Worse yet, the posters and such posted around the stores are making children want a cigarette/cigar because its hanging next to the ice cream cooler. (lol!)

Soon they may pass the laws to move cigars back out of sight (which will destroy cigar store sales). All advertisements will have to be placed behind the sales counter, no longer in the storefront or on the windows, gas price signs, etc.

The next phase will be to remove COLOR from the packaging and advertisements. And it they achieve that, well the next phase will be to eliminate tobacco completely.

I don't care for cigarettes and agree that they are a different breed than cigars. But every change directed toward ANY tobacco eventually trickles down to cigars. That "50 cent Swisher" sold in a gas station means nothing to a real cigar shop, except when the law hits stating cigars cannot be on display. THEN WHAT.

Cigarettes are loaded with Tar and other crap. Cigars are pure tobacco and fermented. The fermentation process removes 99.99% of the tar.
Cooking with Teflon is MUCH more dangerous than smoking cigars. Even if you inhale.
Also, I dont see all the pretty packaging, all the child-targeting with cigars than cigarettes. These 2 things do not belong grouped together any more then soda and your jack Daniels.

I accept your argument, and respectfully call you out on these facts.

Grab an old white tee shirt. Cut out a piece of the cloth, say 6"x6". Fold that up into a smaller square, say, 2"x2". now fire up your cigar. I dont care which one. Get yourself a nice mouthful of smoke, and then hold the folded white piece of cloth over your mouth and blow the smoke in your mouth, through that piece of cloth. Now take a look at the fairly disgusting blemish on the white cloth.
That alone is more than the .01% you say is left in cigars.
Now finish your cigar, and EVERY single time you blow the smoke out, blow it through the piece of cloth (that you bring up and cover your mouth with, to accomplish this). Now at the end of your cigar, look at that piece of cloth.
I will grant your comment some truth, in that cigars are 99.99% pure of the additives that cigarettes have in them. But I, and I'll bet that everyone on this forum, has smoked a cigar that was to damp, and have globs or tar and nicotine oozing from their cigar.

Cigarettes are made with tobacco. It is chopped up much finer. It is laced with a crapload of chemicals. It burns exactly as the tobacco premium cigars are made with.

Tobacco is tobacco. You may not agree with my example because I made it funny. So let me cut the fun:

Whiskey should be legal.
Wine should be illegal.

Baseball should be legal.
Football should be illegal.

General Motors Vehicles should be legal.
Ford Vehicles should be illegal.

Ships (over 100 feet in length) should be legal.
Boats (under 100 feet in length) should be illegal.

While my examples above may seem ridiculous, so is exactly what you are saying.

I'm not even going to touch the cooking with teflon comment, and I could care less how many pictures they paint on the boxes. (cigars or cigarettes)

I do think that the people in the government need to stop policeing me (and other adults). If everyone minded their own business, this country would be a much better place to live.
