i had hard luggage... it came back cracked and the steel supports inside were bent. The bag wouldn't close any more once I opened it.
That's when I switched to soft. I figured they couldn't bend it. After all it's mostly all clothes inside.
Also, the hard bags are heavier.

I figure a bag hard enough to withstand the abuse weighs in at 45 pounds leaving 5 pounds for clothes.

I use semi-rigid and soft luggage for larger cases, for smaller cases we use had luggage.

Any damage and I hound the airline until they pay up, i start at the airport and continue online and through travel insurance until its settled ...... never had any issue with getting claims paid, but going through the correct channels is the way to do it.
