Well, I'm not gonna argue about something I read on the internet, or impugn a trusted family mechanic (or your judgement).

I'm just gonna ask: who's been more right now?

i'm not sure i understand your question. i mean, when i took it to the other mechanic who did all the tests on the vehicle. he concurred what my mechanic had said, that we needed to replace the injectors. which we did. it's just running rough now. i dunno, i'll probably just replace the o2 sensors, and see what happens. i appreciate all the advice, and with the new job, i will have to find a new mechanic anyway. maybe i'll start that search a little early.

Scott, just a quick question......how much have you spent on the car so far & how much did the dealership say it would cost to replace the engine?

Bingo. That was the thrust of my question, Scott.

Dealer says "engine shot."

Mechanics (2) say "try this." Then "try this." Then "well, maybe it's THIS."

You have to consider the possibility you're pounding sand down a rat hole on this one. Sucks, and I've been there too, but . . . it happens.

oh, i understand now. sorry fellas. i've spent less on this than the dealer quoted me just to install the engine, let alone buy the engine. what few parts my mechanic can't give to me for wholesale, i find on ebay dirt cheap. the dealer wanted 700 to install the engine, and a few grand for the engine. i'm sure i can find a rebuilt one, or a junk yard one for less than a grand, but i still have a long way to go before i have that much in this. i also pay half what the mechanic charges for normal shop labor, cuz he's good to us like that. i probably have a total of 500 in this, including parts. so, i guess i haven't really spent A TON, but it still seems like a lot to me. i dunno, i really appreciate your guys' input though, so keep it coming.

I have trouble with my warm air trap door all the time. Just ask Debbi.

scott81425 Wrote:i don't know how to change my own oil. i can wire an electrical system without much problem, but i just can't understand an engine. here is what is going on. i own a dodge intrepid. it had been running really rough, and stalling and dying out frequently. so, my mechanic says we need to replace the fuel pump, and the car runs again. but i can smell gas all around it. so we replace the fuel rail. runs fine for a while, the it gets really rough. replaced the spark plugs, and the spark plug wires, again it runs ok for a while. then progressively it started getting worse. so my mechanic uses his scanner to find the error codes, and finds that we're misfiring all over the place. its a 6 cylinder engine, and we were firing on 3. so i invested in 6 new injectors, and it runs MUCH better. but right at 30-45 mph and at idle it runs terrible. rumbles and shakes. now he says i need a new o2 sensor, because i'm not getting enough oxygen mixed in with the gas. does that sound right? thanks for any advice.
One thing about the Intrepid, if thats the 2.7 liter engine just dump it.  Those things are total shit boxes.  The 2.7s are notorious for suddenly breaking the timing CHAIN among other issues well before service limits.  I can't remember if this engine is an interfierence design or not, which means if the timing chain breaks, valves meet pistons which means new engine instead of just a new chain and reset the timing.  Also I recall hearing they do not make rebuild kits for this engine for whatever reason.
My girlfriend almost got an intrepid with this engine, but as it had been a few years since I was working as a Mechanic in a carshop I couldn't quite remember which engine was the bad one.  I asked my former coworker about this engine and they instantly replied, DONT DO IT!   Tongue

I wouldlnt trust the dealer though if they say its a lost cause.  Thats their answer to alot of things.  "Oh we cant resurface your rotors, better just replace them (even thoughs theres only 20,000 miles on them and they are well within spec)"
