I think that was kinda the point... With all the mythical critters showing up in Japanese waters (Goblin sharks, giant sqids, and such) This is as close to one as has been found to date...

 

While not a TRUE Megalodon, it's preety darn close.

it was simply a whale shark. I have seen these behemouths up  close and personal. They are sharks because the have gill slits instead of a gill plate and no bones. But that's where the similarity ends. They are harmless plankton eaters.

exactly.  really nothing similar to what megalodon was theorized to have looked like.  wikipedia it.  some very interesting info there.
