Sergio's Intro To Hip Hop
#21
Skip I wasnt saying you were old Just that most people at your age tap out and say "they" are too old to change their way of thinking, and thus not moving forward......you are not like that I know. Thank you having an open mind...that is all I ask from everyone looking at this thread.Smile
Not only do I not know what's going on, I wouldn't know what to do about it if I did.

Seeing as how the line between Hip Hop and Rap is a blurry one or does not exist to some, our next artist will be of the Rap kind. Though he might sound like a rapper his lyrics are nothing like what a normal rapper would spit. With polical and social relevant lyrics, Immortal Technique will not only make you think but will for certain start a few pages of comments. From Harlem NY, Immortal Technique...

The videos are made by fans and are not done by Immortal Technique, so I would just listen to the song and minimize the browser.

Immortal-The Poverty of Philosophy     (in this one he just talks and you get his raw politics.....this when I would say it is poetry but with a killer sound and Malcom X like lyrics)

Ok, so you guys like Tribe, De La, how about the Jungle Brothers?  Talib Kweli?  Mos Def (before he became an actor)? Common (see comments on Mos Def)?  I don't want to hijack your thread.

One of my favorite groups is from your area of the country - The Pharcyde.

Tom-ass, I would have guessed that you like KRS-One, especially his song 'w00t, w00t, thats the sound of the beast . . . w00t, w00t, thats the sound of the police.'  Jeebus, Serg, help me out here.

This is crazy... some other hip-hop heads here, eh?

Jungle Brothers...   what memories...

Educated man, from the motherland
You see, they call me a star but that's not what I am
I'm a jungle brother, a true, blue brother
And I've been to many places you'll never discover

At least you didn't mention X-Clan...Cool

What is the first show you remember going to?

I remember seeing Run-DMC in Sacramento in the mid-late 80's...  what an awesome experience...   EPMD and PE opened for them.  Hell of a show!

There was some great older stuff...   I have not been impressed by much of the new stuff out at all.
The Jungle Brothers.  De La.  Tribe.  Remember they were known as The Native Tongues?  I think Black Sheep were down with those guys too.

X-Clan?  MaytagMan!  We must be about the same age.

I used to love PE.  I wore out my 'It Takes a Nation of Millions . . .' tape in my walkman.  (Google it, kids).  Flava Flav wasn't always a reality tv star.

Run-DMC and EPMD.  Its nice to not feel so alone. Smile

I still play this on my iPod at the gym - nothing gets me more pumped up-

Saw De La at a small show in Buffalo, neat the State College, and Camp-Lo opened for them - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG405y51cVk

The Pharcyde is good.

I like both Talib Kweli (saw him in concert at OSU) & Mos Def (who I would point out to Skip as a great example of thoughtful lyrics) quite a bit because they make you think. And, "not for nothing" anybody who like Rage Against The Machine (one of my favorite bands) is quite indepted to the genre.
