need a little networking help/advice
#1
OK- Just like the title says. Do we have any networking experts? Here is my current situation. I have a 4 port router in my bedroom, near my television. It hooks into my 360, ps3, directv receiver, and my obi. Just picked up a 3DTV for out in the living room, and have some devices connected up out there (a network media player, the TV itself, the Directv receiver, an xbox 360 and I move my PS3 out there.) I have those connected to an edimax 5 port access point, the one found right here:

http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7228APn-...cess+point

Ok, here is the deal. I'd also like to hook up internet access in another room in the house. This one will need to have 3 ports of access (for another 360, another Directv receiver, and probably a computer down the road.) Wireless will not reach this room from where it sits now. I tried using my access point in repeater mode, but it absolutely destroys my connection speed, from over 20 mbps download and 5 mbps upload to 1 download and 512 upload when I'm lucky. So I'd like to come up with some sort of switch setup. My question is, and what would be easiest for me, would be to run one wire under the house from the router in the bedroom to the living room, then another (connecting to the swich) from the living room to another bedroom across the house, where another switch would be located to put internet access to those three devices. My question is, will that work? And will it work well? I.E. will I get close to the regular speeds coming out of the router initially, or will they be cut in half at each switch? Would I be better off putting a larger switch in the bedroom and running wires to everything from there? Please help!

Sorry for the super long post.

Well, I've been drinking mid you, but hard wire will always beat wireless. What type of Ethernet cable you using? Wireless N beats G. Where are your g devices, and where are your N. More places you can hardwire the better.if online gameing the 360 I'd hardwire those.computers needing internet is use wireless. You can pick up a box of cat 6e for about 80 and get a crimper and some rj45 connectors. Put your fastest switch behind your modem, may need to make crossover cables depending on switches, hope this helps and not confuses

yes it will work... I recommend netgear prosafe switches... They can be had for cheapish and are the best (there are cheaper options though). How many feet of cable do you think you would need?

Also, consider putting in nice female keystone jacks... It will remove the need for a special crimper and you won't need to buy a 10 or 20 pack of RJ45 connectors because they can be bought individually... Plus, it will look really nice on the wall compared to just a cable coming out of the floor or wall.

Will the easy way work? What I mean is router -> switch -> switch? And will I get the same performance?

You should put your router in the middle. What I mean by that is: switch <-- Router --> switch. But it honestly doesn't matter, thats just good practice. And yes it will work and you'll get the performance you want.

Yes it will work for the situation in which you have described (In a business setting it could be different because of the scale)...

As for performance... For the situation you described should be no noticeable performance hit IF you use decent hardware and IF your longest cable is less than ~330ft...

I'd go with what Tech says...he really knows his stuff & has helped me out in the past answering my many questions.

Thanks everyone. Tech- my longest run would be about 75 feet, tops. So I should be well within the acceptable range of the ethernet run. I bought both of the rosewill switches you linked. 20 percent off, and many many reviews with great scores I figure I can't go wrong. And shipped free with shoprunner. I love it. Now to just go find some cabling and a crimper.
