finally got an update, after my uncle left a pretty stern message about asking for help and then not answering the phone for several weeks.

The doctors are generally dumbfounded, he is not only out of ICU, he is out of the hospital and back in school.  He's in a wheelchair, of course, as there is still a great deal of healing going on.  There is sa doctor at the hospital that is studying the relationship between pain meds and the body's ability to heal.  This 18 year old kid refused pain meds, and they are attributing part of the quick recovery to this, apparently pain meds have some crippling effects on the body's rebuilding functions.

Thanks everyone for all the thoughts and prayers.  I have no doubt there's only part of this situation that can be explained through doctors.
