Spirits, wine & beer were invented because water was the leading cause of illness and death in olden times.

The first legitimate purpose for distilled alcohol was to mix with water to kill off bacteria. From there people reasoned it was magic and can do everything form curring the gout to promoting youth & slowly the water disappeared form the mixing.
