I'm a member of a music forum that utilizes the "Thanks" button. It keeps a running total of the amount of times a member is "thanked". Skipper might be onto something here, as I might consider "thanks" a better barometer than "reputation points"... not that it's a popularity contest. It sort of merits those who take the time to do reviews, help explain things to new cigar smokers, etc.

I dunno, rep points and 'thanks' seem to be two different things, as rep can be given for things other than posts - like gifts, bombs, or helping someone offline. Mum gives guys a rep point on their birthday. And if you simply 'thank' a member for something that you would have given them a reputation point for in the past, then I don't really see the difference. You can give rep points for reviews, posts, or anything you want. Just because a person doesn't make awesome posts or write detailed reviews doesn't mean he isn't a great BOTL.
I agree with the Skipper that 'thanks' would cut down on the 'me too' and '+1' posts though, so perhaps both things could be instituted. Six one way, half-a-dozen the other for me. The friendships and great interaction on Stogie Chat to me are worth more than numbers and forum doo-dads. What makes SC great isn't the code, it's the people here. One can also bring the buddy list into this. I have no clue what that means.
But I agree with Dave's comment. You can do away with all the little do dats as SC will still be SC. A thanks button is like saying thanks only it's the short version. Buddy lists and negative rep are more appropriate to other, more contentious forums. Not a generally relaxed place like SC where everybody gets along for the most part. On other forums the size of a buddy list is simply a popularity contest. It's nice to see someone wants to be your 'buddy' though.
I've been a member of various forums since there was such a thing as an internet and SC is unique in my experience. It's very refreshing to be here. What nobody knows is that BlackKnight (Tony) and I left another forum that we had moderated for many years because we were simply tired of the bickering and threads that turned into train-wrecks. This is why I was kind of serious when I showed up here. I'm used to arguments. This place has a great thing going, something other places can't begin to match believe me. But hey, I got to meet some good people, like yourself. Tony When you have walked in my shoes, done what I've done, seen what I've seen, then maybe you can criticize. |

Those of us that have been on SC for a long time, have known each other forever, and KNOW what this place is all about... Whether we have actually met each other in person or not. That being said... I don't know that "reputation" or "thank you" buttons are needed. We know each other and we appreciate what each person brings to the table. This place generally takes care of itself, and the new people that come here will learn that, and learn who is respected, and who is not, based on demeanor alone, and not by "reputation". Just my opinion
I am blessed to say that I have met ALOT of people on this board, and I consider them all FRIENDS... And the one's I have not had the pleasure of meeting in person, I can't wait to meet, and consider you friends as well!Scott Buy From Eric at www.tbs-cigars.com yet another cigar and beer blog: http://www.cigarchoice.net |

it's just fun to do Scott. Trust me, there are some very close communities on SCUBABOARD that have all met and dove together (diving is a very bonding experience as you put your life in the hands of your partner). The thanks is fun.
