I do it most of the time I smoke ..... I'm also bad for sometimes actually inhaling as well though ..... I know, I know, but hey, it works for me.
The way I see it is that sometimes the taste buds get blasted and lose the ability to actually taste, then its just smoke and buzz, the nose is another aspect of taste and sensation and I use it for enjoying a cigar as well.
It adds to the overall enjoyment for me, like nosing a wine, a malt even a good plate of food ...... its all part of the experience.
As for me picking subtle tastes out of it ...... I've never been good at picking out subtle anything hahahahaha
