I've been buying from J&R since... I'm thinking 1980-ish. The store in NY used to be 2 blocks from my office. I scored a boundle of cigars there that forced me to get my first humidor.

Later on IU worked near their 5th ave location. Suddenly one day their inventory turned to crap. Too many manufacturers refused to deal with them. Then I discovered the alternatives. I think my first was a chateu Fuente Alternative. Like so many other cigars I really enjoyed that first one. I went back and tried others. I believed I enjoyed them until I purchased a boundle. After #3 of the same cigar I realized there was no comparison. It was crap.

jr alts, connies, various seconds from rp, la aurora, famous' whole if you like brand x try this crappola ad campaign and so on.  i think when we all started out we tried them thinking we had "discovered" some hidden treasures.  unfortunately with some very mixed results lol.
