Curivari Selección Privada Robusto
Click HERE to link to and listen to entire episode! Size: 5 x 50 Wrapper: Nicaragua Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua About: The Curivari line of cigars has started to get a lot of attention in the past year. I was first introduced to the brand by my friend Paul in Texas, and there has been quite a buzz about them in the different online cigar communities. As part of the recent package he sent me, Paul sent me cigars from the entire Curivari line to sample and review. Here is a quote from the Curivari website about their cigars: “In all our cigars, we use only the traditional Cuban cigar making process with authentic Cuban Criollo and Corojo seed grown in Nicaragua. From cultivation, to fermentation and aging, we know that every detail makes a difference. During this time every single leaf has been touched by the hands of our people to complete maturity. Only then the full, deep aroma of tobacco truly develops. Every blend created for perfect balance is inspired by tobacco. Curivari cigars are made with 100% Cuban seed Nicaraguan tobacco. We blend for a classic Cuban flavor profile that we enjoy, not with focus on strength, but more looking for flavor and aroma in a right balance. All cigars are finished with a triple cap.” Episode Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by the Cigar Snapshot Gear Store. THE REVIEW: Prelight: The wrapper was lighter than I expected it to be - it was a lighter tan in color, with some lighter hints that almost seemed to be golden-colored. There was a slight oily sheen to the wrapper, and it looked to be in fantastic shape - It was smooth to the touch with no major veins or defects. There were some bumps underneath the wrapper, but they did not seem to have an impact on the construction as the cigar felt well-packed and solidly constructed. AROMA: The prelight aroma was mainly light cedar, with some additional musky and salty notes. The aroma at the foot was the same, just more pronounced. TASTE: In the prelight taste, I found notes of both raisins and cinnamon along with some straight tobacco flavors. 1/3: The cigar started off lightly with a distinct leathery component. It was very smooth in its presence, with an almost buttery-like quality accompanying it. There was a hint of green nuts in the finish and also in the retrohale. The ash was light to medium gray, and very firm. 2/3: In the second third, the flavors became a little more pronounced. The leathery flavor started to change slightly, and started to remind me more of wet leather. The green nuttiness turned into more of a vegetal character, and though normally not a huge fan of cigars with profiles dominated by vegetal flavors, in this case it actually meshed well with the wet leather flavors to create a good balance. 3/3: The flavors remained fairly consistent overall, but the balance evolved a little bit. The leathery flavors became a little muted as the vegetal flavors became a bit more prominent. The cigar continued to exhibit a solid medium body and flavor in the final third, with the retrohale reminding me more of green peppercorns rather than the green nuttiness earlier in the cigar. I smoked the cigar to about the last half inch before it got too hot to continue. Overall: The flavor profile in this cigar was not super diverse, but in this case it was okay, because the profile elements that were present were good and generally well-balanced. Though I think that a little touch of spiciness would have done wonders for the blend, as it is, the Curivari Selección Privada Robusto is a solid medium-bodied smoke with good flavors that would be suitable to smoke at any time of the day. Another great review Bill.
Haven't listened to the episode yet but now I can't wait. Maybe I will track down a Curivari or two and give it a listen. Almirante Pirata
