Anybody make their own humidifier solution?
#1
I've been thinking about trying to get my hands on some polypropylene glycol to make my own solution.  Anybody ever done this or know of where a fella might be able to find polypropylene glycol?  I've been searching online, and I can't seem to find any.

I make my own. In all of my searches you can buy the PG and mix it. I also found out that it was used by pharmacies. I got some from them for a while for free when I got my meds filled. Then I just bought a gallon from the Chemistry store. I buy the jars for the poly gel beads to make my own also. Good luck man. T

.

We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.

You can also call your local pharmacy and order some.  I have done this in the past.  I think the bottles I have gotten are one pint.

Awesome, this is great info.  Thanks once again guys!  I'll give my local pharmacy a try and see how much they charge, then I might end up just ordering it from the Chemistry Store.  Thanks.

Yep, used to make my own with the PG juice I get at cost since I manage pharmacies.Big Grin  I always like a 50/50 mix myself.  Just remember to shake thoroughly after your PG solution has been sitting for months.  You only need to add PG a couple times a year.  The rest should be straight distilled water.  Oh and ask your local independent pharmacy if they have a large enough liquid bottle for you to make your 50/50 solution in.  Any real pharmacy should have them and sell you one for a couple bucks.  Good luck!

I got a 2 liter bottle of the pottable stuff a while ago. 100%. I make it all the time, but man, what a reaction. When I mix my stuff with water it get hot. Real hot. Too hot to mix in a plastic bottle. I have to do it in glass and let it sit for a day before pouring it into a squirt bottle.

I dont remember where I got mine from but I had a business at the time and found a form to fill out online. They then sent me an order form to order more in 55 gallon drums!

I ordered some for a coolerdor once from a little local pharmacy. It was a little expensive but much cheaper then buying the mix. I think it was about $8 a pint. I don't use it anymore. It is either active humidification or beads only.

This is where I get my PG. I bought like 3 gallons to maximize the value on the shipping, and now I have all the PG I need for a long, long time!

You will pay much more for the volume at a pharmacy. So, if you're looking long-term, I'm go with ChemistryStore.

One more tip... I only use like 20% PG in my mix, as the water evaporates much faster than the PG. If you do a 50/50 mix, you'll end up with a lot more PG after a while and I'm don't feel good about how that impacts the functionality of my humidifiers. Using a smaller amount of PG makes it go farther, and I usually mix up a whole container of solution at a time and use it until the bottle is gone before remixing.
