As far as butane lighters...
I have several nice torches, but I reserve them for VERY windy occasions. (or in the fancy shmancy cigar lounge)
At home on the deck - I use one of these butane beauties.

Mainly because I left all my lighters in Modesto and had nothing but wood matches and a lot of time on my hands, I tried the ritual. You must be patient. I had to use eight short wood matches, and constantly turning is essential to keep from blazing up one side of the stick. However, I followed it exactly, cutting the cigar only once I had the foot burning evenly. Here is my result.

Well worth a try, but I must concede that it is more ritual than practical for imparting any foreign flavor, but being a Mason I am partial to ritual. Big Grin

And, yes, the other side was just as even. Big Grin
